The Harmonic Genius of Silk Sonic | Skate
Anderson Paak and Bruno Mars are doing their best to bring interesting harmony back to the charts, and their new single "Skate" is a prime example.
In this video, I identify three main components that make this song so harmonically flavorful:
0:00 Intro
0:23 Where's The One Chord?
2:16 Let The Melody Be Your Guide
4:24 It's All About Those Slash Chords
If you have any questions about what I've said in this video please feel free to ask in the comments or reach out to me on Instagram @musicisa_verb

Deconstructing NDA by Billie Eilish
Переглядів 2,2 тис.2 роки тому
A look at the music theory, production, and songwriting techniques of NDA by Billie Eilish. This song has it all. Amazing chord progressions, unique production, an INCREDIBLE vocal performance (as always), and a cool take on song form that might be setting a trend for modern pop music. I've been wanting to sit down and listen to a Billie Eilish tune on my channel for a while and this one did no...
The chords that inspired Linkin Park AND Lil Nas X
Переглядів 1,5 тис.2 роки тому
Do you know what Linkin Park and Lil Nas X have in common? This beautiful chord progression. The other day while driving my car I heard "Somewhere I Belong" by Linkin Park. I hadn't heard it in years. When it hit the chorus, I was shocked to find that I started belting "Old Town Road" because of the similarities in the harmony. Both songs have this EXTREMELY peculiar quality of being largely in...
Deconstructing 'drivers license' by Olivia Rodrigo
Переглядів 2,9 тис.2 роки тому
THIS is how you write and produce a pop song. In this breakdown and analysis of “Drivers License” by Olivia Rodrigo, I look at some of the theory, production, and songwriting tools that she and her producer Dan Nigro used to craft the track. I really can’t say enough good things about this song. It’s simple but surprising, using typically pop song conventions but also subverting them pretty con...
How H.E.R. Reharms A Song | America The Beautiful Song Analysis

An in-depth analysis of how H.E.R. arranged 'America The Beautiful' for the 2021 Super Bowl. I was blown away watching the Super Bowl this year by H.E.R. performing her reharmonizes version of America The Beautiful. This is one of my favorite patriotic tunes and she managed to pay beautiful homage to versions of the past while also creating an entirely unique and groundbreaking arrangement. She...
Deconstructing 'Levitating' by Dua Lipa
Переглядів 110 тис.3 роки тому
In this detailed analysis of the Dua Lipa hit "Levitating" I take a look at the elements that producer's Koz and Stuart Price used to craft a perfect dance-pop track. I LOVE how this track uses simple elements to create some real complexity, both rhymically and harmonically. The simple drum groove has just enough of a hook to pull your attention, but it's real brilliance is in how it leaves spa...
Why You Should Listen To JAZZ During Christmas

4 GREAT Chords In Jingle Bell Rock
Переглядів 7353 роки тому
Using music theory to talk about the best chords in the song "Jingle Bell Rock." Christmas songs have the best chords. And no, I'm not just talking about Dm7b5. These songs all come from a wonderful era of jazz-influenced songwriting, and they make regular use of cool music theory concepts- including intricate harmony, resolving guide tones, and subtle (or not-so-subtle) modulations. While some...
How To Produce A Non-Singer | "Feel Like I Do" by Vin Diesel
Переглядів 3,7 тис.3 роки тому
So Vin Diesel is making music…and rather than ask the obvious question “why?” I’m going to try and answer a more interesting question: “how?” How does a producer take a non-professional singer and craft a radio-ready pop song out of their vocals? This is what happened here with producer Petey Martin and Kygo. While Vin does a fine job, this song is a master class in taking a small amount of sou...

Deconstructing 'Holy' by Justin Bieber ft. Chance The Rapper

In this breakdown and song analysis we see a PERFECT example of how to blend tried and true gospel music theory ideas into pop songwriting and production. Tight drums and bass and a smooth rnb vocal mixed with some organ, choir, and gospel piano chords. Make sure to check out Part 2 where I build a track based on what I heard here when it comes out! A special mention of Bieber’s vocals- for whi...

This song goes with Betty and August (and Willow) I think when she’s talking about high heels on coblestone she’s talking about knowing about august and everyone assumes she doesn’t know…. Cuz James talks about walking on cobblestones before he meets up with Betty… Also she says “when you are young they assume you know nothing” and James says “I’m only 17, I don’t know anything… There are so many things when you listen to them together.

It’s a borrowed chord! I always assumed the song dances between Mixolydian and Major. The chorus sits in Mixolydian and uses a common borrowed chord for that mode. You can really hear the mode during the chorus’s outro when they use a Major flat VII chord that resolves back into the root’s major chord

Great. It would help if you click on the track you'r describing. That way we could see the track settings on the left. Example: when your describing the heel track 1:12 , you still have the tambourine info on the left. It'd be great to see the settings for the heel track. In fact you do this in the several videos I've sen thus far. That doesn't take away from the awesome work you've done. I hate negative comments, this is just an observation. Keep up the good work. You've got a nw subscriber.

    The structure is pretty cool too. There's a very distinct pre-chorus, then chorus, and then a second, different chorus. 00 - 10 Intro 11 - 27 Verse 28 - 36 Pre- Chorus "you want me" 37 - 55 Chorus "I got you, moonlight" 56 - 60 Post Chorus 100 - 118 Verse 119 - 128 Pre Chorus "you want me" 129 - 146 Chorus "I got you, moonlight" 147 - 205 Chorus-Chorus "You can fly away with me tonight" 206 - 224 Bridge 225 - 232 low Pre - Chorus "You want me" 233 - 242 Stripped Chorus "I got you, moonlight" 243 - 300 Chorus-Chorus "you can fly away with me tonight" 301 - end Chorus "I got you, Moonlight"

With all the normal caveats of tonality being (sometimes) subjective...to my ear this song is in D Major, the chorus modulates to F Major, and then the bridge (which I didn't talk about in the video but is SO cool) is in D Minor.

I think that you harmonic analysis is incomplete. If you Forget the vocals (sampling in the intro) you have a dissonance but if you adding those notes and analice that, you will find some fifths making the consonant and give us some reasons to understand Why this element is present all the time. Apologyze for my English I´m from Mexico.
